This virtual museum presents the cultural heritage of the deaf and sign language users in Finland.
Here you can find information about the Finnish Museum of the Deaf exhibition in Helsinki, the museum’s collections and lots of information about the history of the deaf and sign language in Finland. The public exhibition is located in Helsinki, while the collections are housed at the Finnish Labour Museum Werstas in Tampere.

Content of the video above: The Museum of the Deaf preserves the cultural heritage of Deaf and sign language communities in Finland. The museum operates as part of the Finnish Labour Museum Werstas. The Museum of the Deaf’s exhibition is located at the Light House in Helsinki.
The new exhibition at the Museum of the Deaf opened in October 2024. The exhibition space is located in the lobby of the Light House.
The Museum of the Deaf’s collections and office are located at the Finnish Labour Museum Werstas in Tampere. Much of the museum’s work focuses on its online museum, which provides a wide range of information about the museum. The online museum presents the history of Deaf and sign language communities in Finland in detail.
The Museum of the Deaf’s exhibition features historical objects and photographs related to education and vocational training, association activities, leisure time and family life, among other topics.
The museum makes use of moving images and interactive elements. At the beginning of the exhibition, visitors meet Carl Oscar Malm, a prominent figure in the Finnish Deaf community who founded Finland’s first school for the Deaf in Porvoo in the mid-19th century.
Sign language culture and its long history are also among the themes of the exhibition. The exhibition features art and culture spanning more than a hundred years, from visual arts to performing arts. It includes everything from a sign language choir from a hundred years ago to the sign language rap artist Signmark.
The museum is maintained through cooperation between the Finnish Association of the Deaf and the Finnish Labour Museum Werstas.
In addition to sign language, the languages of the exhibition are Finnish and Swedish. English-language texts are available via QR codes.
TIETOA
Kuurojen museon uusi näyttely avautui lokakuussa 2024 Valkeassa talossa Helsingissä. Näyttelytila sijaitsee valkean talon aulassa. Kuurojen museon kokoelmat ja toimipiste sijaitsevat Tampereella Työväenmuseo Werstaan tiloissa.
Tehtävät sopivat esimerkiksi 5.-6. luokkien yhteiskuntaopin tunneille, tai uskonnon, elämänkatsomustiedon ja historian opetukseen.
